Frequently Asked Questions

What is Barre Fitness? Do I need to have ballet training?

Barre has its roots in Ballet, Pilates, and Yoga and also incorporates strength training. We do use a ballet barre, but NO ballet training is needed. Barre fitness is a low-impact, high-intensity form of exercise that uses small isometric movements to work muscles to the point of fatigue. Stretching and lengthening of the muscles afterwards help create long, lean muscles, without the bulk.

What makes Barre for Life different?

The mission of Barre for Life is to provide an awesome barre fitness experience to our clients, while at the same time helping members of our community that are affected by cancer. A percentage of proceeds from every Barre for Life class will go toward doing good for local cancer patients and their families, and every month YOU (our members) will nominate these Barre for Life heroes! Dinner delivery, spa days, and therapeutic massages are just some examples of prizes we will deliver monthly to our Barre for Life prize recipients and their families (Note: prize recipients do not need to be members, but they must give permission to be recognized). Barre for Life will also intermittently use proceeds collected from classes to donate to various local and national cancer-related organizations.

What does the lavender Barre for Life ribbon represent?

Lavender is the color that represents general cancer awareness. At Barre for Life we are working to be strong for ourselves and for all others affected by cancer of any type.

What does a typical class look like?

Each class starts with a dynamic warm-up which leads into abdominal, arms, thighs, and seat work. Exercises are set to fun and energizing music that really keeps you going, and they are always modifiable based on your fitness level. Throughout the class, the barre instructor will provide adjustments and place emphasis on proper body alignment and form to help you maximize your workout and avoid injury. A final stretch evens it all out, and you will leave class exhausted and SO satisfied! The full body-burn is truly addicting, and you will see changes in your body you never thought possible! Barre makes you strong!

What do I wear and what should I bring to class?

You should wear comfortable leggings or capris with an exercise tank or T-shirt. We do not recommend wearing shorts—trust us, your knees will thank you! Grip socks (also known as sticky socks) are required. If you do not have these, they are available for purchase at the studio. We will provide all exercise equipment, but you may want to bring a water bottle to help you stay hydrated.

I have never taken a class before. What’s the process?

If this is your first class, please arrive about 10 minutes before your scheduled class-time to check in and fill out new client paperwork. One of our super-friendly team members will show you around and give you a quick overview of the equipment you will need for your class. Cubbies for your belongings are available in the front of the studio. When you’re ready, remove your shoes and put on those sticky socks! When it’s time for your class, find a spot in the center of the studio and get excited waiting for the party to start!

A lot of other barre studios have carpeted flooring. Why does Barre for Life have a wooden floor?

We’re glad you asked! Wooden floors can help provide better traction. How many of us can remember “losing our grip” in the middle of what should have been a great exercise simply because our socks were sliding across the carpet?! A wooden floor will also provide more stability for the ankles, because it will not “give” or soften under your feet. Last but not least, we believe a wooden floor is a lot more sanitary! We all know those carpets can harbor lots of dust, debris, and bacteria, and our owner-doctor simply won’t allow that for her clients!

Is Barre for Life only for women?

Absolutely not! Barre exercise is a fun and challenging workout for all!

I saw a woman’s legs shaking in class. Is that normal?

Definitely. When the muscles are worked to the point of fatigue they can start to shake. This is great and means you are pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. Find your shake and hold onto it. You got this!

If I am pregnant, can I still take a Barre for Life Class?

You should always consult with your physician first, but most clients can continue to take barre class while pregnant.
Let your barre instructor know you are pregnant, so that you can discuss modifications. Be sure to stop any exercise that makes you feel uncomfortable in any way.
